Hauntingly aromatic and mildly toxic, the common Tansy plant (Tanacetum vulgare) has garnered a morbid reputation due to its frequent appearance in funerary rites. Tansy's golden button-flowers and fern-like leaves have perfumed the dead throughout history. The Latin genus name Tanacetum is derived from the Greek "Athanasia," meaning deathlessness, or immortality. This divinely scented funerary herb preserves the deceased from the corruption of decay.
Tansy Hydrosol may be used for rites of purification, banishing, and protection against the miasma of death. As a cleansing wash for the deceased, Tansy's pesticidal, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties prevent mouldering, and the grazing of worms prior to disposition. It is particularly effective in the midst of summer when the elements hasten putrefaction. Tansy Hydrosol may also be used as a fragrant insect repellent during natural burial and graveside ceremonies.
Steam distilled on the day of Saturn in the hour of Venus, Tansy Hydrosol is available in 2oz spray bottles for asperging of self and space, and 8oz bottles as a purifying wash for the deceased.
Scent Notes: Sweetly Herbaceous, Slightly Floral, Fresh, Camphorous
*Tansy may be an allergen to those with sensitivities to the Asteraceae family. Tansy contains the volatile oil thujone which may cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
